Concrete Work Beside the Onion River
Waldo is a small village in the Town of Lyndon, west of Sheboygan, with 467 residents at the 2020 census. Homeowners here who need concrete contractors are usually replacing older concrete or adding a patio, garage slab or parking pad. We pour driveways, patios, stamped concrete, sidewalks and steps, and garage and shed slabs, and we repair concrete that has cracked, heaved or settled.
A railroad village with a mill pond
Wikipedia says the Milwaukee and Northern Railway laid tracks through the area in 1871, and N.C. Harmon platted the village on 80 acres in 1873. It was first called Lyndon Station, then renamed for Otis Harvey Waldo, a Milwaukee attorney and the railroad's president, because Juneau County already had a Lyndon Station. Waldo incorporated in 1923.
The Onion River runs through the village. A dam, saw mill and grist mill were built on it in 1856, and today the Onion River Dam is 15 feet high and 300 feet long, holding the Waldo Mill Pond, which has a normal surface area of 40 acres and is used for recreation. The village owns the dam and pond property.
What the river means for concrete
Lots near a river and mill pond can have softer, wetter ground and higher spring moisture. Before we pour near the water, we check how the yard drains and whether the soil is firm enough. Where it is soft, we dig deeper and add more compacted gravel. We set every slab with enough pitch to shed water, because water trapped under concrete is what freezes, lifts and cracks it.
Older homes, steady village
Waldo had 450 residents and 174 housing units in 2000, then 503 residents and 209 housing units in 2010. The former Waldo High School was built in 1904, and the Waldo School District merged into the Sheboygan Falls School District in 1962. Waldo Cemetery, established in 1854, is one of the oldest in the county. That long history means many homes have walks, steps and garage floors that have been in place for decades. Replacing those pieces, on a proper base and with air-entrained concrete, is much of our work here.
Inland winters
Waldo sits at about 856 feet, well inland from Lake Michigan. Every exterior pour we do uses air-entrained concrete, compacted gravel and joints at the right spacing to stand up to freeze and thaw.

Waldo Questions
Can you pour a patio near the Waldo Mill Pond?
Yes, with attention to drainage and soil. We check the ground on site, add base where needed and slope the patio so water runs off. Work very close to the water may need extra approval, which we check first.
My front walk heaves every winter. Why?
Heaving usually means water is getting under the slab and freezing. Replacing the walk on a deeper, compacted gravel base with proper slope usually solves it.
Do you work on farms around Waldo?
Yes. We pour driveways, equipment pads, garage and shed slabs and pole building floors in the area.
