Concrete in a Village Made of Three

Cleveland is a small village in southern Manitowoc County, north of Sheboygan, and the concrete contractors who work here mostly pour and replace the basics: driveways, garage floors, patios, walks and front steps. The village had 1,579 residents at the 2020 census. We handle all of that, plus stamped concrete and repairs for slabs that have cracked, settled or worn.

Three communities, one village

Wikipedia says Cleveland was formed in 1958 from the unincorporated communities of Centerville, Hika and St. Wendel, and named after President Grover Cleveland. That origin matters on the ground. Each of the three settlements had its own older houses before they joined, so the village has more than one cluster of older homes rather than a single historic center. Concrete on those blocks may be many decades old, and some driveways and walks were poured long before air-entrained mixes became standard.

Growth since 2000

The population rose from 1,361 in 2000 to 1,485 in 2010 and 1,579 in 2020, and housing units went from 578 to 643 between 2000 and 2010. Homes from that period now have driveways and patios that are 15 to 25 years old. Those slabs often show the first signs of wear: cracked aprons, a settled panel by the garage, or a patio corner that has broken away.

We look at the whole slab before recommending anything. Sometimes a couple of new panels are all you need. Sometimes the base has washed out under most of the slab, and a full replacement on new gravel is the only fix that lasts.

A college and a commute

The main campus of Lakeshore Technical College is in the village, and Wikipedia notes that local students usually go on to Horace Mann Middle School and Sheboygan North High School in the Sheboygan Area School District. Many families here split their days between Cleveland, Sheboygan and Manitowoc, which means more vehicles per household and more wear on driveways. A wider drive or an extra parking pad is one of the most common projects we quote here.

Built for winters in this part of the state

With Lake Michigan to the east, this stretch of the shoreline sees a lot of freeze and thaw. Our outdoor pours use air-entrained concrete, a compacted gravel base and joints at a spacing that suits the slab. We pitch everything to drain, and we recommend sand over salt on new concrete for the first winter.

Permits and rural lots

We check with the Village of Cleveland about permits for driveway approaches, public walks and new slabs before we schedule. On rural lots outside the village, we check with the town and county. Call (920) 635-2280 to set up a visit.

Cleveland Questions

Can you widen my Cleveland driveway for another car?

Usually yes. We cut a clean edge on the existing slab, dowel the new section in where it makes sense, and pour the widening on a compacted base. We check setbacks and permits first.

My garage floor has a crack across the middle. Does it need replacing?

A single crack that is not moving or uneven is often cosmetic. If the slab has sunk, heaved or broken into pieces, replacement is usually the right call.

Do you work in the farm areas around the village?

Yes. We pour driveways, shed and equipment pads, garage floors and patios on rural lots around Cleveland.
