Concrete in a Village Set in a Glen

Glenbeulah is one of the smallest villages we serve, with 451 residents at the 2020 census, and homeowners here who need concrete contractors want the same quality of work as anyone in the city. We pour driveways, patios, stamped concrete, sidewalks and steps, and garage and shed slabs, and we repair concrete that has cracked, heaved or settled in Glenbeulah and the countryside around it.

What the name tells you

Wikipedia says Glenbeulah was named for its setting in a glen and in honor of Beulah, the mother of a railroad contractor. The village sits on the Mullet River, and a post office named Glenbeulah has operated since 1860. Being in a glen on a river means slopes and low spots. Driveways may climb from the road, back yards may fall toward the water, and some lots stay wet well into spring.

For concrete, that puts drainage first. We look at where water comes from and where it needs to go, then set the grade so slabs shed water away from the house. On low or wet spots, we add base depth so the slab is not sitting on soft ground.

The highest town on our list

At about 978 feet, Glenbeulah sits higher than any other community on our service-area list and a long way inland from the lake. Winters are cold, and concrete here goes through a full season of freezing and thawing. We use air-entrained concrete for all exterior work, place it on compacted gravel and cut control joints at the right spacing. On sloped walks and steps we use a textured finish for winter grip.

A small village that grew

The village had 378 residents and 160 housing units in 2000, then 463 residents and 204 housing units in 2010, about 28 percent more homes in a decade. Historical counts show 375 residents in 1880, so some homes and lots go back a long way, while others are fairly new. We find older stoops and walks near the center and newer drives and garage slabs on the edges.

Trail town

The Old Plank Road Trail runs 17 miles from Sheboygan to Glenbeulah. Many residents here also have larger lots and outbuildings. We pour shed and garage slabs, equipment pads and parking areas, sized for the vehicles and loads they will carry.

Glenbeulah Questions

Do you travel to a village as small as Glenbeulah?

Yes. Glenbeulah is part of our regular service area in western Sheboygan County.

My driveway climbs from the road. Will concrete be slippery in winter?

We use a textured broom finish on sloped drives for grip, and we slope the surface so meltwater runs off instead of freezing in place.

Can you pour a slab for a new garage or shed on a rural lot?

Yes. We size the slab to the building, prepare a compacted base and coordinate with the builder on timing.
