Concrete for a Harbor Town on the Bluffs
Port Washington is the Ozaukee County seat on the Lake Michigan shore, at the southern end of our service area, and concrete contractors working here deal with steep grades, older downtown blocks and lake weather. The city had 12,353 residents and 5,456 housing units at the 2020 census. We pour driveways, patios, stamped concrete, sidewalks and steps, and garage and shed slabs, and we repair or replace concrete that has failed.
Bluffs and a valley
Wikipedia says the Lake Michigan shoreline bluffs here range from 80 to 130 feet high, and that the historic downtown sits in the Sauk Creek valley, lower than the rest of the city. That makes grade one of the biggest factors in concrete work. Driveways that climb from the street, walks that step up to a front door and patios on sloping yards all need careful forming, the right slope for drainage and steps or landings where the grade demands them.
On steep drives we pay attention to surface texture for winter traction, and to how water runs down the slab so it does not wash out the base at the bottom.
An older core
Port Washington incorporated in 1882, and its harbor was completed in 1871. The Port Washington Light station, built in 1860, is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the city has a Downtown Historic District. Wikipedia also records that an 1899 factory fire burned nearly half of the city, and that the Wisconsin Chair Company at its height employed about half of city jobs.
Older homes near downtown often have narrow drives, steep front steps and walks lifted by tree roots. We replace what has failed and keep the new work in proportion with the house and the street.
Growth since 1980
The city had 8,612 residents in 1980, 10,467 in 2000 and 12,353 in 2020, and housing units rose from 5,020 in 2010 to 5,456 in 2020. Newer neighborhoods on the edges of the city tend to need patios, wider drives and repair of settling garage aprons more than step and walk replacement.
Storms and lake weather
On August 22, 1964, an F4 tornado destroyed 20 houses and damaged 34 in Port Washington. Severe weather like that is rare, but the lake brings wind, damp springs and plenty of freeze and thaw every year. We pour exterior concrete with air-entrained mixes on compacted gravel, slope everything to drain and seal surfaces after curing.

Port Washington Questions
Can you replace a steep driveway in Port Washington?
Yes. On steep drives we plan the forms and pour sequence carefully, use a textured finish for traction and make sure water does not undercut the bottom of the slab.
My front steps are steep and uneven. Can they be rebuilt more comfortably?
Often yes. We can add a landing or adjust the rise and run within the space available, then pour new steps on proper footings.
Do you work in Port Washington's older downtown neighborhoods?
Yes. We plan access on tight lots, protect foundations and keep new walks and steps in proportion with older homes.
