Concrete Work in a Village With an Unusual Start
St. Nazianz is a small village in southwestern Manitowoc County with 714 residents at the 2020 census, and homeowners here hiring concrete contractors are usually replacing older concrete or adding a patio or slab. We pour driveways, patios, stamped concrete, sidewalks and steps, and garage and shed slabs, and we repair concrete that has cracked, heaved or settled in the village and on the farms nearby.
Founded as a colony
Wikipedia says Father Ambrose Oschwald, a Roman Catholic priest, led German immigrants from the Black Forest of Baden to settle here in 1854. The first group numbered 113 people. Oschwald bought 3,840 acres in Manitowoc County at $3.50 an acre, and the settlers shared everything in common and worked without pay until 1896. The community was organized in 1854 as a religious colony and named that August.
A village with roots that deep has some very old houses near the center, along with homes from every decade since. On older lots we often replace stoops, walks and narrow drives, tying new concrete carefully to old foundations.
Housing and growth
The village had 749 residents and 302 housing units in 2000, then 783 residents and 346 housing units in 2010. About 15 percent more homes were added in that decade, and their original driveways and patios are now at the age when the first repairs come due: a sunken panel by the garage, a cracked apron or a patio corner that has broken off.
Winters inland
St. Nazianz sits at about 856 feet and is well inland from Lake Michigan. Every exterior slab we pour uses air-entrained concrete on a compacted gravel base, with control joints at the right spacing and enough slope to drain. We also recommend sealing after the first month and avoiding rock salt in the first winter.
Farm country work
The land around the village is largely rural. We pour farm driveways, equipment and parking pads, pole building floors and slabs for garages and sheds. We size these for the heaviest loads they will see and lay out joints to control cracking.
