Concrete for a River City on a County Line
Kiel is a small city of about 3,900 people west of Sheboygan, and concrete contractors working here deal with a mix of century-old houses near downtown and newer homes on the edges. The 2020 census counted 3,932 residents. We pour driveways, patios, stamped concrete, sidewalks and steps, garage and shed slabs, and we repair or replace concrete that has failed.
Two counties
Kiel is mainly in Manitowoc County, but Wikipedia says part of the city reaches west into Calumet County, an area known as Hinzeville. In 2020, 3,585 residents lived on the Manitowoc County side and 347 on the Calumet County side. The city handles its own permits, but for properties on the edges or just outside the limits, which county and which town you are in can matter. We confirm where your property sits before we plan any work that might need approval.
The Sheboygan River runs through town
The Sheboygan River enters Kiel from the Kiel Marsh at the southwest edge of the city and exits on the east side, with a dam downtown. Lots near the river and the marsh can stay wet longer in spring. On those properties we pay extra attention to base depth and drainage. A patio or driveway that sits in standing water through freeze and thaw will break down much faster than one that drains.
A manufacturing town
Charley Lindemann settled the area in 1852, and his wife named it after her hometown of Kiel, Germany. The village incorporated in 1892 and later became a city. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Kiel became a manufacturing center for brick, wooden shoes, machinery and furniture, and it was once called the Wooden Shoes Capital of Wisconsin because it had the state's only wooden shoe factory.
That history left the city with many older houses close to downtown. On those blocks we often replace front stoops, narrow drives and walks that have been patched for decades. We tie new steps to the existing foundation, keep walks at a scale that suits the house and protect old brick or stone where the concrete meets it.
Growth on the edges
Housing units rose from 1,498 in 2000 to 1,697 in 2010, and population grew from 3,450 to 3,738 in the same decade. Many newer homes came with a basic drive and no patio. We design patios and stamped concrete that fit those yards, with a slope away from the house and joints placed so the slab cracks where we intend.
Built for inland winters
Kiel sits at about 920 feet, inland and higher than the lakeshore. Every exterior pour gets air-entrained concrete and a compacted base. Call (920) 635-2280 to set up a visit anywhere in Kiel.

Kiel Questions
My Kiel home is near the river. Will a new patio last?
It can, with the right base and drainage. We check how water moves across the lot and set the base depth and slope so the patio does not sit in water.
Does it matter which county my Kiel address is in?
Inside city limits the City of Kiel handles permits. For properties on the edge or outside the city, county and town rules can apply. We confirm before planning.
Can you rebuild old front steps on a downtown house?
Yes. We remove the failed steps, build new ones on proper footings and tie them to the foundation, with a rise and run that suits the doorway.
